Periodontal (Gum Disease) Therapy
Your good dental health is our primary concern. Periodontal disease (also called gum disease or gingivitis) refers to the infection of the supportive tissues of the mouth due to the toxic bacteria found in plaque. Many individuals suffer from some degree of gum disease, up to 75% according to a recent study. If left untreated, gum disease can cause tooth loss, bone loss, and other significant health problems. Dr. Gregg and Dr. Bradd will assess your periodontal health, and if needed, they will conduct the appropriate therapy to restore your gums and supportive tissues.
Common treatments for gum disease include:
- Scaling – Removing hardened plaque (calculus or tartar) from below the gum line.
- Root Planing – Evening out rough spots on tooth roots to prevent bacterial attachment.
- Antibiotics – A small dose of antibiotics directly to the infected area will help battle infection.
Patients with gum disease should attend more frequent cleanings to keep the disease from spreading and to encourage fresher breath. Dr. Gregg and Dr. Bradd will work with you to develop a schedule that accommodates your lifestyle.
